Jeremy moved slowly around his bedroom, fluffing the pillows and savoring the rare comfort of crawling into bed early. Outside, the first warnings of a snowstorm had begun to swirl across Berkshire. But inside his old home, warmth and silence wrapped around him like an old friend. He’d planned to sleep through the worst of the storm, safe beneath heavy blankets, undisturbed.

Just as he was lowering himself into bed, the doorbell rang.

The sharp chime jolted him. “Who could it be at this hour?” he muttered, easing his aching joints upright. With a soft groan, he shuffled to the door and cracked it open.

There stood the neighbor girl—young, breathless, and pale with worry.

“Mr. Rogers,” she said, her voice urgent, “there’s a dog in your backyard. I think it’s been there all day. It’s freezing.”

Jeremy thanked her and closed the door gently. He stood in silence for a moment, troubled. A stray dog? In this weather? He hadn’t heard a bark or seen a thing all afternoon.

Still, the girl’s concern lingered in his thoughts. He pulled on his thick coat, wrapped a scarf around his neck, and slid into his old winter boots. With a sigh, he opened the back door and braced himself.

The cold struck like a slap. Wind clawed at his coat and bit through his gloves, and every step through the snow was slow, deliberate. His breath came in misty bursts as he crossed the yard.

Near the fence, he saw it—a hunched, unmoving shape barely visible in the snow.

At first glance, it looked like a heap of matted fur. But as he crept closer, Jeremy saw the faint rise and fall of breath. The dog was alive, barely. Curled tight against the cold, it looked more like a shadow than an animal.
