The Scam
“Grandma, I can’t explain much right now,” the voice said—strained, rushed, desperate. “But they said if you could post bail, I could get out tonight. It’s $10,000. Can you do that for me, please? I promise I’ll pay you back.”
Marie’s hands trembled as she clutched the phone. Her thoughts raced. That was a large amount—but it was money she had saved over the years, tucked away with quiet pride. Money she’d always intended to leave for Danny one day.
But if this wasn’t the time to use it, then when?
“Of course, sweetheart,” she whispered, her voice breaking. “I’ll do whatever it takes.”
The voice of the so-called officer returned, calm and precise. He gave detailed instructions on how to transfer the money—where, how quickly, and under what name. Numb with fear, Marie followed every word, her fingers shaking as she completed the transaction.
When it was done, she slumped into the nearest chair, her chest tight with emotion. She tried to pray, tried to breathe. Her thoughts circled endlessly, filled with one desperate hope: that Danny would be okay.

She spent the next hour pacing, glancing at the clock, jumping at every sound outside. The house, once her comfort, now felt cold and unfamiliar—like it, too, was holding its breath.
The Truth Revealed
Nearly two hours had passed when she finally heard it—the quiet click of a key turning in the lock.
The front door creaked open.
“Grandma, I’m here!” Danny’s familiar voice rang out cheerfully as he stepped inside, setting down his bag with a casual smile.
Marie froze. Her face drained of color. She stared at him as though she were seeing a ghost.
“Danny?” she whispered.
He paused, frowning at her expression. “Grandma, what’s wrong?”
She collapsed onto the couch, her legs too weak to hold her up. “I was so worried,” she whispered. “I thought… I thought you were in trouble.”
He came toward her, confused and concerned. “Trouble? What are you talking about?”
Tears welled in her eyes. Her voice cracked. “They said you were arrested.”
